In the books, they broke their contract with one of the free cities and invaded Westeros under Aegon VI’s leadership. Their original plan was Viserys and his(dany’s actually) dothraki khalasar + golden company but their plan collapsed by Viserys’ death. Their second plan after that, Dany and her dragons + golden company, Illirio informs them Daenerys is currently at Slavers Bay so they, first time in their history, broke their contract with Myr probably(or was it Tyrosh, I’m not sure) and went to Volantis. While they were waiting Dany’s and Aegon’s arrival, they learned that Daenerys decided to rule Slavers Bay, after burning the cities to the ground.. Aegon, thanks to the manipulations of Tyrion, decides they do not need Daenerys, she can join them after he reclaim his throne.
While on the road before those thing happened, Tyrion asks Illirio; Golden Company never broke a deal and they formed to fight against Targaryens. Why broke their contract and support Targaryens now?
Illirio replies; some contracts made with gold, some made with blood. Blackfyres are dead and Red(Targaryen) or Black(Blackfyre), a dragon is still a dragon. They are soldiers of exile and Daenerys will take them to home.
I hope in the show, they will switch sides for Jon Snow particularly if the news of his parentage spread of course, cuz you probably noticed that Dany’s reputation is like shit all across the known world, people thinks she is a mad tyrant like her father(just like in the books golden company really dislike her after her actions in slavers bay) but unlike her Jon has quite positive reputation, even Ramsey admitted that before their battle. Also there is no Aegon in the show, show writers kind of fused Aegon in to Jon, they even make Jon’s birth name Aegon, which was really ridiculous. They also give Jon Connigton’s grey scale(he was close friend and most likely platonic lover of Rhaegar and currently taking care of Aegon) to Jorah Mormont for another example of character combination. They really like doing this stuff, believe me. If they really fused book Aegon in to show Aegon(Jon Snow), Golden Company’s betrayal to Cersei would not be a surprise.
But personally I do not think show writers will do that, cuz you know, only 6 episodes left. They will probably focus other things.ANSWERS： I’d say the chances are fairly high.
And they’ll do it because they are fundamentally Targaryen loyalists. They were founded by the Blackfyres, a cadet branch of House Targaryen. And their most significant battles were to place the Blackfyres on the Iron Throne as the legitimate heirs of Aegon IV. But the Blackfyres have died out, and so it would be natural for them to side with the surviving Targaryens.
This is even more explicit within the books, where the Golden Company actually plan on joining Dany. A plan that’s only broken when Dany appears to be in no rush to leave Meereen, and they switch their allegiance to Young Griff/Aegon Targaryen*.
*A probable impostor posing as the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Elia Martell.ANSWERS： Well, the Golden Company was founded by a Blackfyre in order to overthrow the Targaryens that have since sat on the Iron Throne.
So, one point against Dany (and Jon).
But, having war elephants and 20,000 fresh soldiers, that would a problem for the Dothraki and Unsullied (War Elephants have long been the bane of regular cavalry and can shatter formations with ease).
So, two points against Jon and Dany.
Dany still has two, large, fire-breathing dragons.
Point for Dany and Jon.
There’s a huge hoard of undead now streaming past the Wall, led by a being that can raise thousands at once. And since the dead don’t know fear, pain, or tiredness…
Point for Jon and Dany.
Theon is currently headed to rescue Yara from Euron. The big question; is Yara with Theon, headed for Essos? If so, and Theon kills Euron and takes control of the fleet, then Theon could take the fleet North in their employ instead.
So, half point for Dany and Jon.
It really just depends on the circumstances that the show goes with. Dany (and Jon) being a Targaryen would be the biggest issue for the Golden Company, as their entire existence is based around putting a Blackfyre on the Iron Throne over the main branch of the Targaryen House.
But a pair of dragons and an ever growing army of zombies can be pretty convincing.ANSWERS： The question assumes that the Golden Company will even agree to join Cersei to begin with in season 8. We only know Cersei wants to hire them and that she sent Euron with a lot of gold.
Euron is going to have to sell them on the prospect of winning against 2 dragons, the North, the Eyrie, Dothraki, Unsullied and leave out those tales about thousands of dead men. Even Essos hears Westerosi rumors. His strongest persuasion tactic is giving them lands and titles back after living in exile. We also have to have the leap of faith that Euron is going to do the right thing with a boatload of gold and relative safety from zombie hordes attacking his best in class personal Navy.
My best guess is that this interaction with the Golden Company is where Theon makes his move on Euron to get Yara back. Theon cannot fight Euron with force, he has to outsmart the sociopath. By telling the Golden Company the truth he will earn their trust and serve as spoiler to Cersei. He will promise them full pardons from Dany and the ability to be true heroes of legend by beating back the Army of the Dead. Think of the disgraced ghost soldiers Aragorn brought to fight Sauron’s orcs - the Golden Company are them; men who want their self-worth restored more than gold or titles or lands.
This is the only possible place I see the never-ending Theon plot line going and the most probable use for the Golden Company.
